Columbia: City of Rivers, Vistas and Dreams by noted South Carolina writer Tom Poland is the newest edition in Publishing Resources Group’s series of books about cities focused on a future that is both prosperous and sustainable. Much more than a photo-journal celebrating the area’s physical beauty and its vibrant cityscape, it launches a discussion into the community’s commitment to becoming one of the world’s most attractive business destinations and the best place to live, period. Below is the profile from the book featuring Brownstone’s achievements and impact on the city’s projects.

“Brownstone Construction Group has been delivering program and construction management services in the Southeast since 2005 and has established itself as a premier minority-owned Construction Management and Architectural Design firm  in  the State of  South Carolina. With over  $200 million of  completed  construction    experience, Brownstone has successfully provided committed and competent services for Owners. One of the key drivers of Brownstone’s success is our commitment to exceeding clients’ expectations and our ability to deliver on our promise of on- time and on-budget performance.

Providing the Right Solutions for Our Clients

Our staff is very familiar with all facets of agency/construction program management services including scheduling, cost estimating, value engineering, site management, procurement and document control. We focus on and specialize in being an advocate for the Owner and acting as an extension of their staff. The vast majority of our experience has been in this type of role, and we are diligent about maintaining our reputation as dedicated Program Managers and Owner Advocates. Brownstone brings superb facility program management expertise, local knowledge, management tools, knowledge of the South Carolina market, and a complete understanding of compliance with all applicable laws, guidelines and requirements. We are not the big- gest firm, and we do not pursue everything. We focus on the market sectors and regions that we can fully support and in which we are experienced and successful. With this mindset, we are proud of our repeat clients here in Columbia as well as in Charleston, Dillon, and Savannah, Georgia.

During a recent interview, Dale Collier gave the following response to a question regarding the most rewarding aspect of being the President of Brownstone Construction Group: “In our attempts to be client-oriented, we strive to provide the right solutions for our clients. This focus has allowed us to gain the trust of those who’ve entrusted Brownstone to provide construction, program management and architectural design services. We are proud to have a listing of satisfied, and even repeat, clients who’ve re-hired our team to provide additional services. Working and connecting with people of various backgrounds and capabilities has been very rewarding. In most cases, clients retain our services for a specific period of time, and we provide consulting services in an area for which they are unfamiliar. Establishing and maintaining the confidence of our clients has given us the opportunity to secure work in other locales based on positive references received from others.”

Establishing a Local Presence

During our time in Columbia, Brownstone has worked to establish our presence in the area by providing competent and legitimate services for our clients. Significant projects to date that we’ve been involved with include Richland School District Two’s Center for Achievement and the recently completed University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business. On the heels of the completion of the Business School, Brownstone will continue its relationship with the University of South Carolina as a CM at Risk partner with Gilbane Construction Company on the University’s New Law School.

Brownstone also continues to solidify its presence in the Columbia area by having the lead Program Management role in the renovation of Decker Center for Richland County. This much anticipated project will consolidate a number of the County’s Courts and Sherriff’s operations in the former Decker Mall and is expected to be a major component of the revitalization of this area.

Brownstone is also fortunate to be involved with the Richland County Transportation Penny program that will provide much needed transportation improvements throughout the County. This multi-year infrastructure improvement program will address roadways, streetscapes, bikeways, greenways and intersections throughout Richland County. As a lead partner on the 3-firm Program Development Team, Brownstone will lead management and design efforts in the areas of Procurement and Greenway Design.

Brownstone Design

Brownstone was recently proud to announce the addition of Architectural Services to our clients. Since its launch in 2012, Brownstone Design has initiated several projects in the Columbia area to include Upgrades at Crane Creek Park, Richland County Sports Complex Study and Additions and Renovations of CMRTA headquarters. With additional work in Allendale and Fairfield Counties, the design arm of Brownstone looks forward to the 2015 much anticipated completion of the Fairfield Career and Technology Center for nearby Fairfield County School District in Winnsboro, South Carolina.

Establishing Local Partnerships

Our Local, Small, Woman Owned and Minority Business Enterprise (LSWMBE) Outreach Efforts in the Columbia and other areas are second to none with documented results exceeding Owner goals on several projects. We have established ourselves as a “team player” with other MBE firms who see us as a partner in this effort instead of a direct competitor. Our track record has led to other MBE firms maintaining constant contact with our team as they are confident that they will have legitimate opportunities on our projects. In fact, several firms have written letters of support for Brownstone involvement on other projects as they understand that their opportunities will only increase if Brownstone is involved. This level of commitment has led to a “contractor following” that results in higher LSWMBE participation rates for our clients.

Commitment to Excellence

While many are familiar with our very successful Management, Design and Outreach Efforts, we feel it imperative that our firm also be known for our “boots on the ground” efforts to complete projects. To this end, we have expanded our portfolio to provide on-site personnel on Construction Management at Risk teams assigned to the work construction projects. With personnel in decision-making roles on each project, Brownstone has gained valuable experience that will allow the company to expand into other areas of construction in the future. Construction experts provided on these projects have included Project Managers, Assistant Superintendents, Quality Control Supervisors, Assistant Project Managers as well as Administrative personnel. These persons have accepted their assigned tasks and performed admirably for our clients in response to Brownstone’s “no pass-through” philosophy of providing legitimate services. As a result, all Brownstone partnered projects to date have been completed on-time, within budget, with great quality and free of controversy for our Owners. The aforementioned University of South Carolina Law School will further establish our personnel in this form of construction delivery.

Looking Toward a Promising Future

South Carolina has afforded Brownstone Construction Group to grow at a manageable pace during our short history. With major projects ongoing in Columbia, Charleston and other locales, the state is both large enough to sup- port our operations, while being small enough for us to respond immediately to client concerns within the same day, if necessary. The majority of our employees call South Carolina “home” and are excited to be part of what we’re expecting to be a bright future. We look for- ward to many years of growth in the Columbia area as we will commit ourselves to providing professional and competent services for our clients.”
